Marshfield Man Charged with Throwing Puppies in the Garbage Gets to Keep his Dogs

Friday, May 24th, 2019 -- 12:51 PM

(Marshfield News Herald) -A 56-year-old Marshfield man charged with abandoning eight puppies in a garbage may keep his four dogs, a judge has ruled.

Robert M. Wild faces misdemeanor mistreating animals and animal abandonment charges after authorities say he put eight newborn Australian shepherd Labrador puppies in a trash can Feb. 28. If convicted, he could face up to nine months in jail and a $10,000 fine on each of the two counts. Wood County District Attorney Craig Lambert asked Circuit Judge Greg Potter Thursday to change the conditions on Wild's $2,000 signature bond Circuit Judge Todd Wolf set April 22. The bond prohibited Wild from having abusive contact with animals. Lambert asked Potter to prohibit Wild from having any animals whatsoever.

Since Wild's first court appearance April 22, Marshfield Area Pet Shelter staff said the shelter is able to take any animals Wild has, Lambert said. The shelter would temporarily take in the animals until Wild's court case concludes, Lambert said. Potter said there was nothing to indicate the four dogs Wild owns have been mistreated. The shelter could have taken the dogs when the puppies were found Feb. 28, when prosecutors filed charges or when Wild made his initial appearance April 22, Potter said. Potter said he would not change the bond Wolf set.
