Education Advocates Think There Will be an Increase in Education Funding in the Budget, But Not as Much as the Governor Wants

(AP) -Advocates for K-12 schools and the University of Wisconsin System say they think Republicans will want to spend more money on education, but they don’t anticipate it will be as much as Democratic Gov. Tony Evers proposed.Education advocates and the lobbyist for the state chamber of commerce spoke Tuesday at an event organized by the nonpartisan Wisconsin Policy Forum. It comes two days before the Legislature’s budget-writing Joint Finance Committee planned to vote on education funding. Evers proposed a $1.4 billion increase in state aid for K-12 schools.
Wisconsin Manufacturers and Commerce lobbyist Scott Manley says the important question is whether schools can spend any increase they get more efficiently. Wisconsin Association of School Boards lobbyist Dan Rossmiller says what schools want is predictable and sustainable funding that keeps pace with inflation.
