With the Arrival of Spring, Wisconsin Humane Society Says Spay and Neuter Your Pets

Tuesday, May 21st, 2019 -- 7:42 AM

(WRN) -Spring is here and humane societies are asking you to get your pets spayed or neutered to help control the pet population.

It's "kitten season" for animal shelters and humane societies across the state, and you're being urged to get your pet spayed or neutered to help keep that in check. Wisconsin Humane Society spokeswoman Angela Speed says spaying or neutering your cat is really the best option to not only control the pet population but to help solve some major medical problems with your feline friend.

"And it can also reduce or elimination behavioral problems such as yowling and spraying and marking territory, and even some types of aggression can be reduced or eliminated through spaying or neutering."

Speed says if you're having trouble affording a spay or neuter, there are options.

"You can check with your own vet clinic, and definitely check out your local humane society because even if they don't offer spay/neuter they may know of low-cost options in your community."

Speed says "kitten season" is the time of year when shelters get flooded with feral and unexpected litters of kittens.

"There are probably about six to seven hundred cat and kittens in our system just today, so we're caring for hundreds of cats this time of year."

She says getting your pet spayed or neutered is not only good to keep the pet population down, but it can also help your dog or cat avoid serious medical problems into the future.
