Neillsville City Council Approves Beginning Process of Changing Over to New Water Meter Reading System

Thursday, May 16th, 2019 -- 11:51 AM

-The Neillsville City Council approved beginning the process of changing over their Water Meter Reading System at their meeting on Tuesday.

The Neillsville Public Works Department decided it would be beneficial to switch to a wireless meter reading system as opposed to their current manual system now. Public Works Director Dave Flynn said this would save the department time because they would simply have to walk by a property on the sidewalk in order to collect the needed data compared to having to walk right up to the meter now. This proved especially difficult this last winter with all of our snow. The city received two bids, one from Census, which they currently use and another from Neptune. The Water Department recommended the city stay select Census for the upgrade as they’ve already replaced some meters and have been working with Census for some time now.

The department has 187,000 meters to replace and the cost from Census came to $238,935. The city must begin the process by filing an application with the Public Service Commission to get approval to do the project. The city currently has $109,761 they’ve been using to replace some meters and, with the money continuing to come in, they would have enough to cover most of the cost of the entire project.
