West Central Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission Releases Housing Number for Clark County

Wednesday, May 15th, 2019 -- 10:19 AM

-The West Central Wisconsin Regional Planning Commission released housing numbers for Clark County.

The numbers were prepared for the Clark County Economic Development Corporation and Tourism Bureau’s Business-to-Business Expo and Career Fair. The number looked at U.S. Census data for 2000 and compared it to ACS five year estimates for 2016. Clark County’s housing affordability ratio in 2016 was 2.47 indicating that the median house is affordable for the median household income. For “cost-burdened” households, 24.2% of county households were “cost-burdened,” which was a decrease from 27.5% in 2010. A home is considered “cost-burdened” if it pays more that 30% or more of its income on housing costs. Also, in 2016, 13% of Clark County households were living in poverty. Additionally, 29% were classified as ALICE households, which are households that earn more than the Federal Poverty Level, but less than the basic cost of living for the county.

Combined, the number of ALICE and poverty-level households equals the total population struggling to afford basic needs. The percentage of households in these two categories increased 6 percentage points between 2014 and 2016. Some other numbers from the report show Clark County saw an increase of 929 people in that time frame and the average age increase by almost a year and a half. The number of households increased by 685, but the size decreased. Also, Clark County saw an increase of 15.6% in the number of one person households and a decrease of 6.6% in the number of households with children.
