Vos Says No One Should Be Surprised

Sunday, May 12th, 2019 -- 11:18 AM

Wisconsin Assembly Speaker Robin Vos says no one should be surprised that Republicans have rejected Democratic Gov. Tony Evers’ plan to expand Medicaid coverage.

The Associated Press reports that Republicans on the Legislature’s finance committee voted Thursday to kill the proposal along with dozens of other Evers initiatives in the state budget. Wisconsin is one of 13 states that haven’t taken the expansion. The GOP says it doesn’t want to move an estimated 82,000 people onto Medicaid, even though it would leverage $1.6 billion in new federal money for other health care priorities.

Vos told reporters after the vote that he’s been signaling for months that Republicans wouldn’t accept the expansion and anybody who didn’t believe that doesn’t know how things work. He says the GOP will never support a “massive expansion of welfare” that is unsustainable.
