Republican Abortion Bill Could End Up in the Assembly Next Week

Wednesday, May 8th, 2019 -- 6:26 AM

(WRN) -A Republican bill that would require doctors to care for babies who survive abortion attempts or face criminal charges could come to a vote in the state Assembly as early as next week.

During a hearing in the Assembly Health Committee, the bill's authors said it would leave no doubt that health care providers must do everything they can to keep such babies alive. Democrats said babies are rarely born alive during failed abortion attempts and there’s no record of it ever happening in Wisconsin.

They also said that doctors are already ethically bound to care for the child and that killing it would be homicide under current state law. Governor Tony Evers has said he'll veto the bill if it reaches his desk.
