Be Cautious When Buying Flowers for Mother's Day

Monday, May 6th, 2019 -- 10:45 AM

(WRN) -Mother's Day is next Sunday and if you're looking to find a flower arrangement for Mom, make sure you're getting what you're paying for.

Mother's Day is next Sunday and if you're looking to find a flower arrangement for Mom, make sure you're getting what you're paying for. State consumer protection director Michelle Reinen says one option you might have, if your mom lives here in the state, is to get a local florist to put together something with a Wisconsin touch.

"If you are asking these questions and really looking, you may be able to get something special that's unique to our state, and give that as your gift as well."

Reinen says you always want to talk with the florist you're dealing with, and make sure you're getting something appropriate for your budget.

"Other questions are what flowers are fresh and season in that specific area. In Wisconsin we're going to have different seasonal flowers right now than somebody in Hawai'i or Florida."

Reinen says you want to be sure the service you're hiring really is local to your mother. Many businesses will simply be a branch office.

"They're really serving as this middle man, as opposed to the person who will really be coordinating and putting together your end product."

Reinen says it's always good to try and hire a florist close to your mother, and see if you can't see a sample of what you might be getting before you send it. Ask about pricing and if a vase is included, and when possible work with a florist directly in your mom's area, rather than a florist service. Ask about who's supplying the flowers, and where they're coming from. You might be able to find comparable bouquets for more reasonable prices with a bit of shopping around.
