(WRN) -Legislative Republicans are backing a bill that would establish dairy research centers across the state.State Republicans are pushing for the creation of a network of UW based Dairy research facilities. State Assemblyman Travis Tranel says they're proposing to spend 8 million dollars a year on locations in Madison, River Falls, and Platteville.
"And I think it's the least that the state can do to show its commitment to an industry that we have a significant amount of our heritage tied to."
Tranel says the state produces more milk than it can handle, and that we need more markets and products for that dairy.
"We're not looking how to increase those efficiencies, we're not looking to increase production, we want to add value to what we already do very very well."
Tranel says farmers and producers need to find things to make with all the milk farms produce.
"We are very good producing milk. We are very good at producing high quality milk, and we are very efficient at producing lots of high quality milk, to our own demise, unfortunately."
He says the goal will be not to improve dairy output, but rather to find something to do with all the milk that the state has. It's hoped the program will broaden the markets and ensure a stable economy into the future.
