Spring is Here, Becareful if You're Shopping at Yard Sales

Tuesday, April 30th, 2019 -- 8:49 AM

(WRN) -Spring is here and while you're out perusing those yard sales, make sure what you're about to buy is safe.

Spring is here and while you're out perusing those yard sales, make sure what you're about to buy is safe. State consumer protection director Michelle Reinen says that the danger lies in purchasing something that's been recalled due to safety issues.

"This can include toys, other children's products, as well as those favorite second hand items such as tools and electronics."

Reinen says making purchases through local online classifieds brings different meanings to safety as well.

"Safe in that physical context where you're going to make that swap and purchase, but also that you don't receive a fake check for the payment for the goods that you'll be purchasing."

Reinen says using an online service to exchange funds for a local classified purchase is good, but read the fine print.

"Understand all the rules and policies behind that, and when that money will be validated and released to you based on the exchange of the goods."

You can get a free app from the Consumer Product Safety Commission to check to see if an item you're interested in is safe or not. You can find a link online at D A T C P dot W I dot GOV
