Wisconsin Republicans Open to Compromise Regarding Medicaid Expansion

Monday, April 29th, 2019 -- 9:47 AM

(AP) -Wisconsin Republicans open to a compromise with Democratic Gov. Tony Evers on Medicaid expansion are looking at ways to accept the federal funding without appearing to cave on the issue.

Talks are ongoing even as Republican legislative leaders remain opposed to full expansion. Evers is also publicly refusing to bend from his full expansion proposal, despite its near-certain demise in the Republican-controlled Legislature. Chatter about finding a compromise is giving a thin thread of hope to those who have pushed for years to take the money and use it for a host of health care initiatives.

Republican state Sen. Luther Olsen says he thinks the state has to take the money, but doesn’t know if it will. Other Republicans say they’re looking at what other states have done to compromise.
