Wisconsin Has 64,800 Farms in 2018

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -The total number of farms in Wisconsin during 2018 was 64,800. That was unchanged from the year earlier, according to newly released figures from the USDA.

By the numbers, Wisconsin had 28,800 operations in the $1,000-$9,999 sales range this past year, up 100 compared to 2017. But the largest of the farm categories, which are operations that did over a million dollars in business, was unchanged at 2,150. Total land on farms in the Badger State was 14.3 million acres, also consistent with the year previous. Wisconsin's average farm size remained unchanged at 221 acres. The average farm size for those in the $1,000,000 and over economic sales class was 1,674 acres.

Meanwhile, the number of farms in the United States for 2018 is estimated at 2.02 million, down by 12,800 from 2017. Total land on farms, at 899 million acres, decreased by about 870,000 acres from the prior year. The average farm size in the U.S. is 443 acres, up slightly from 12 months earlier.
