Owen-Withee School Board Discusses Keeping Extended School Day

Friday, April 12th, 2019 -- 10:55 AM

-The Owen-Withee School Board discussed the length of the school day for the next year at their meeting on Monday.

The board discussed the continuation of the longer school day, 10 minutes each day, that was started in February, which is helping to make up time lost to snow days. By continuing the extra 10 minutes each day throughout the 2019-20 school year the hours of instruction will be 52 more than required by state statute. That makes a 7 day cushion should the weather be as disruptive as this year. The board took no action on the item and will discuss it again at the May meeting. The board also discussed Policy 763, School Meal Fee Collection. The board discussed this issue extensively. A vast majority of families in our district are excellent at keeping their lunch balances in the positive, or taking quick corrective action when they go negative.

A small minority of families are making no effort to pay for their child’s meals and are running up a sizeable negative balance. Solutions discussed include not allowing the student to eat, providing an alternative lunch and continuing efforts to work with the families to get the problem resolved. The board directed Mr. Houts to contact the family and offer solutions to the situation. If this doesn’t work, the board will look at other solutions and make policy changes to put more effective measures in place.
