Debate Continues on How to Fund Roads

Thursday, April 4th, 2019 -- 12:45 PM

(WRN) -As construction season gets underway, the debate on how to pay for road funding continues.

Triple A Wisconsin spokesman Nick Jarmusz says a recent survey shows that the overwhelming majority of Wisconsinites are looking for action to fix the roads.

"There's no consensus on what specifically should be done, but there is broad consensus that SOMETHING should be done."

Jarmusz says a recent survey they performed says most of the state is in favor of some form of tax or fee increase.

"Only 20 percent of people say we shouldn't do anything, so that means that 80 percent of people think we should be doing something."

Jarmusz says over 80 percent of respondents in a recent poll said they wanted to pay more for better roads.

"There's just not enough consensus about what one thing we should be doing, or which combination of things would be acceptable."

Only one in 5 people surveyed said they would not be willing to pay increased taxes for road projects. Their survey showed that 25 percent of respondents would be willing to pay more at the gas pump, while 19 percent were in favor of road tolls. Over 60 percent of people also said that current funding was not adequate to keep the roads properly maintained into the future.
