Spencer School Referendum Passes

Wednesday, April 3rd, 2019 -- 11:27 AM

(WDLB) -Voters in the Spencer school district have said “yes” to a nearly six-million dollar building and remodeling project.

The five-point-nine-eight million dollar project passed on Tuesday 781-598. District Administrator Mike Endreas says the money will go a long way in terms of renovating the school building to improve safety and security, maintaining, upgrading and equipping facilities and constructing and equipping an addition to the school building for education, music and athletics.

Endreas says the referendum money will be used to relocate the elementary school office to provide a safe entry, renovate the family and consumer science room, which includes asbestos removal, create designated choir and handbell rooms, and construct a dome structure for new gymnasium, wrestling and weight room facilities. Endreas also said the facilities covered with the referendum are all needs, and not just “wants”.

Endreas said the relocation of the elementary school office will start as soon as possible. As for the dome construction, Endreas said he’s waiting to hear whether the district is awarded a “FEMA” grant for some of that work. He’s expecting to find out in early May. If the grant money comes through, that would push construction back to the spring of 2020, because the funds would not be distributed until December. If the grant is unsuccessful, Endreas expects work to start this fall.
