With All the Snow, Worse than Usual Flooding Expected this Spring

Wednesday, February 27th, 2019 -- 9:00 AM

(WRN) -Parts of Wisconsin have hit new record high snowfalls this winter.

National Weather Service coordinator Jeff Last says Wausau has already reached 70 inches of snow this year.

"We're over 30 inches more snow so far this winter than last winter at this time. So quite a bit of snow on the ground and still some more to come."

Last says all this snow means we're going to be seeing worse than usual spring flooding.

"Those rivers that tend to flood with the snowmelt in the spring have a higher threat this year because of the snow that we've had so far this winter."

Last says much of the snow that covers the state is heavy and wet, and contains a lot of moisture.

"As the spring rains start to develop, you still have all that water in that snowpack, that can create the flooding problems that we're concerned about this spring."

And even though the calendar is about to flip over to March, there’s still a lot of winter left.
