Foundation of Former Marshfield Hospital Allocates Last of its Funds

Thursday, February 21st, 2019 -- 8:57 AM

(WDLB) -The foundation of the former St. Joseph’s Hospital in Marshfield is allocating the last of its funds.

Ascension Wisconsin announced today that more than one-million dollars will be going to Marshfield’s Ronald McDonald House and the St. Vincent DePaul Free Medical Clinic. Ascension took over the foundation once Marshfield Clinic completed its purchase of St. Joseph’s Hospital in July of 2017. The Foundation’s Board of Directors allocated the remaining unrestricted funds. Foundation Director Patti Shafto-Carlson said the Foundation’s Board of Directors allowed several non-profit agencies to apply and present their case for the remaining funds.

Carlson said two projects in particular rose to the top, and one is getting the bulk of the remaining unrestricted funds. She says one-million dollars will be used to expand and enhance free health care services, which the Clinic has done for more than 20 years already.

The Free Clinic provides primary and preventative care and chronic disease management until patients can obtain insurance or become established with a permanent health care provider. The Foundation Board is also awarding more than 161-thousand dollars for two projects through Ronald McDonald House Charities.

One is the Legacy Park and Playground. The other is the Hospitality a la Carte, described as a compassion-on-wheels project that will provide resources for the needs of families of seriously-ill children at Marshfield Children’s Hospital. With these allocations of funds, and money from 53 donor-specific funds, Carlson says the 28-year-old Foundation will now be dissolved at the end of June.

The Foundation of Ministry St. Joseph’s Hospital was established in 1991, and will be dissolved officially on June 30th. Meanwhile, the Children’s Miracle Network which Carlson was so closely associated with remained with Marshfield Clinic after its purchase of St. Joseph’s Hospital. Carlson will continue to serve as the Foundation Director and the Director of Community Outreach for Ascension St. Clare’s Hospital in Weston.
