Owen City Council Discusses Quite Zone Traffic Study and More

Tuesday, February 19th, 2019 -- 9:05 AM

-The Owen City Council discussed a quite zone traffic study at their meeting last week.

The council approved the mayor to move ahead with the rental of the traffic counter at the cost of $720. This would be for one week’s rental which would allow for the counter to be placed at the three needed crossings for two days each. They also heard an update on the Heartland Rail Spur. Community Development Authority Director Tim Swiggum reported the cost of the Rail Spur for Heartland, which will consist of three tracks, totaling $1,480,000. Of this amount, this city will be responsible for $1,200,000, which will be covered by TIF #4 funds. The council also heard the Treasurer’s Report, the Police Report and the Public Works Report. The meeting was held during last week’s snow storm, so the Public Works Director reported on the constant removal of snow that day. They also had 8 water meters freeze up during the extreme cold. The council also approved a temporary license for the Lions’ Ice Fishing Contest on March 3rd. During the Public Opinion portion of the meeting, a resident claimed he had to do all the snowplowing on 4th Street. He also voiced his concern about the Heartland Rail spur stating that the plans he ‘had seen’ were going to make a lot of people upset when they lose their garages.

CDC Swiggum responded that that was just not correct; that Heartland had been working with the property owners to insure they had ample space for their garages. The resident also stated that Cedar Corp Engineering should be made aware of the stream under Colman Street as this will increase the cost of the Colman Street Project dramatically. Finally, CDC Swiggum gave his report. The Owen-Withee Area Chamber of Commerce held their 17th Annual Businessman’s Gathering Feb. 4th at Beaver’s Bar and Grill in Withee. The speakers were Riley Hebert and Ericka Rossani from the Clark County Young Professionals group. The Annual Business Expo will be held April 6th at the Old School and a ribbon cutting for the new addition at the Clark County Rehabilitation and Living Center was held.
