Owen-Withee School Board Reviews District Safety Assessment

Tuesday, February 19th, 2019 -- 8:06 AM

-The Owen-Withee School Board reviewed the District Safety Assessment at their meeting last week.

The board reviewed the Safety Assessment that was done by CESA 10 and area law enforcement. The assessment identified several best practices the district can implement in the coming years to make their facilities more secure. The board also discussed make up snow days. Due to the six weather-related days they have experienced so far, a decision on how and when to make up time was needed. Currently, the district has enough hours of instruction to have three snow days. The board forgives the first two and reserves the right to choose what to do with the third. All other time must be made up to meet DPI requirements. The board discussed this issue at length and made three decisions about the time. On March 15, which is currently a vacation day, will now be a regular school day. Starting Monday, February 18th, and going through the end of the year, the school day will begin at the usual time, but they will release 10 minutes later.

Elementary students will be released at 3:20PM, while Jr/Sr High students will be released at 3:27 PM. As more snow days can be expected, they actually had the seventh on Tuesday, February 12th, the board will revisit this issue at the March meeting and add more days to the rest of the year to ensure that the district is meeting the hours of instruction mandate. Vacation days that are being looked at for the possibility of becoming regular school days are April 18th, April 22nd, and May 31st.
