Wisconsin Congressman Wants Package of Tax Breaks for Craft Breweries and Wineries Permanent

Monday, February 18th, 2019 -- 8:57 AM

-Congressman Ron Kind wants to make a package of federal tax breaks for craft breweries and wineries permanent.

Congressman Ron Kind wants to make a package of federal tax breaks for craft breweries and wineries permanent. The package has been on a two year pilot program, and Kind says it's important to give small businesses a chance to get their feet under them.

"And we want those small to midsize breweries to be more competitive against the larger ones, the larger ones that are right now being gobbled up by foreign interests."

Kind says the program works with federal agencies to help small to midsize breweries, distilleries and wineries.

"This is a way to reduce that tax burden, reduce some of the regulatory hurdles they have to overcome."

Kind says the Craft Beverage Modernization and Tax Reform Act makes it easier for small to midsize operations to meet compliance and pay excise taxes.

"We were able to get a two year implementation of this bill in place, but that's going to expire at the end of next year again. So we want to build in some permanency."

Kind says the total impact of craft breweries in the state is over two billion dollars a year, and he wants to help expand that.
