Wisconsin Senators Working, Again, to Delist Wolves from Endangered Species List

Friday, February 8th, 2019 -- 9:03 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -After falling short during the last session of congress, U.S. Senators Ron Johnson and Tammy Baldwin are once again pushing legislation that would delist the gray wolf in Wisconsin, Michigan, Minnesota, as well as Wyoming under the Endangered Species Act.

On Wednesday, the Wisconsin lawmakers proposed a bipartisan amendment to the Natural Resources Management Act that would restore wolves to the status determined to be appropriate by Department of Interior wildlife experts; thus allowing individual states to develop their own wolf population management program. The senators have been working to remove the gray wolf from the endangered species list since 2015.

They say the animal maintains a stable and growing population with an expanding territory in Wisconsin. A similar measure has recently been introduced in the House by Rep. Sean Duffy. At last count, the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources estimates the state's wolf population to be around 950 animals.
