Wisconsin Municipalities Make Changes to Sex Offender Ordinances

(AP) -Dozens of Wisconsin municipalities have expanded the areas where convicted sex offenders are allowed to live after they're released from prison.Wisconsin Public Radio reports that Milwaukee, Waukesha and most recently Brookfield are among the cities that changed their sex offender ordinance following a federal court case in Pleasant Prairie. A judge in 2017 determined that the village's ordinance barring sex offenders from living in 90 percent of the town violated the equal protection clause of the U.S. Constitution.
Deputy city attorney Adam Stephens says Milwaukee loosened its rules to give convicted sex offenders more options after the case. Brookfield repealed and recreated its ordinance last month to allow sex offenders to live in 24 percent of the city. City attorney Jenna Merten says the change will protect Brookfield from future lawsuits.
