Wisconsin Congressmen Among Sponsors Of Tariff Bill

Sunday, February 3rd, 2019 -- 9:42 AM

Two Wisconsin congressmen are among the main sponsors of a bill that would require the president to submit to Congress any proposals that would adjust tariffs on imports in the interest of national security.

Wisconsin Ag Connection reported on Wednesday, Reps. Ron Kind of La Crosse and Mike Gallagher from Green Bay joined Darin LaHood of Illinois and Jimmy Panetta, California, in introducing the Bicameral Congressional Trade Authority Act of 2019. As part of the measure, members of Congress would have a 60-day period following submission to review the president's proposal. However, a joint resolution would qualify for expedited consideration in both chambers, if deemed necessary. Kind says the requirement would apply to all future Section 232 actions, in addition to those taken within the last four years, thus rolling back some of the actions taken by the President.

Gallagher adds that when it comes to trade, Congress has consistently surrendered its Constitutional authorities to the executive branch. But he says this bill reverses that trend. A companion bill has also been introduced in the Senate. The bill's sponsors claim they have over 20 national groups endorsing the policy.
