Democrats Look to Rein in Outside Funding for Political Campaigns in Wisconsin

Friday, February 1st, 2019 -- 8:02 AM

(WRN) -Democrats want to rein in outside funding for political campaigns in Wisconsin.

Democrats want to rein in outside funding for political campaigns in Wisconsin. Representative Melissa Sargent says laws passed by Republicans in 2015 made it easier for dark money to enter the election system.

"We saw an increase in negative attack ads, we saw an increase in contributions from corporations and wealthy people."

Sargent says this is a fight for the very nature of how business is run in Madison.

"The unlimited contributions to political parties and legislative campaign committees has had a negative influence on how policy is made in the state of Wisconsin."

She says that right now, wealthy donors can hand their funds to political parties or campaign committees, who then hand it off to individual candidates. She wants that to end, and to put into place more visibility of who's donating to candidates.
