Marshfield School District's Graduation Date Continues to Move

Thursday, November 15th, 2018 -- 8:09 AM

(WDLB) -The timing of Marshfield High School’s graduation may continue to move around. After being held on a Saturday this year, commencement ceremonies were moved off of Memorial Day weekend, and put back on Sunday for the current school year.

And under the school calendar for the following school year adopted by the Board of Education last night, graduation stays on a Sunday in 2020, and also falls on the weekend after Memorial Day. For the current school year, the move was made to accommodate students who had athletic conflicts on the Saturday after Memorial Day weekend. Superintendent Ryan Christiansen and Board President Frances Bohon said last night the later date also lines up better with class schedules, meaning students graduating on Memorial Weekend were in danger of not meeting the required time in a classroom before walking out the door.

Ryan: "My understanding of going a week later than Memorial Day weekend is because of instructional minutes."

Francis: "We talked about that last year. We had a big discussion for this year's calendar because, otherwise, it give you almost 2 weeks where the seniors that are graduating are not fulfilling the instructional hours because, once they graduate, they don't have to come back to classes."

Ryan: "They would be done a full 2 weeks before the rest of the students where now they're done one week before the rest of the students."

Also under the 2019-2020 calendar, school starts on September Third next year, spring break would run from March 30th through April Third of 2020, and June Fifth of that year would be the last day of school. The calendar was adopted with two members absent.
