Hatfield Fire Department Responds to Chimney Fire

Thursday, October 18th, 2018 -- 11:13 AM

-The Hatfield Fire Department responded to a chimney fire on Wednesday.

On October 17, around 12:10PM, the Hatfield Fire Department was paged by the Jackson County Emergency Dispatch Center for chimney fire at W8358 Beaver Lane. This address is located in the Town of Adams and County of Jackson. Upon arrival the department had fire coming through the roof of a 23’ x 39’ single family, single story wood frame home. The fire was venting around a metal wood stove chimney pipe. Mutual aid was requested from the Merrillan Fire Department and the Black River Falls Fire Department. The fire was spotted by a tree service in the yard cutting down a tree. The tree service noted smoke coming from the roof ridge and entered the home to advise the home owner that the structure was on fire. The home owner was not aware of the fire as it was in the attic, roof area of the structure. The 911 Center was advised of the fire by the tree service and also by a power company in the area. The power company was in the area as they had taken down power lines to the home for the tree removal.

The fire appears to have been caused by the wood stove. The structure has heavy damage and cannot be lived in at this time. A fire damage estimate is not known at this time and it was insured. The owner and his dog did safely exit the structure. The Red Cross was contacted to assist the owner. There were no reported injuries to any firefighters. The Hatfield, Merrillan and Black River Falls Fire Departments were on scene for two hours with a total of 17 firefighters.
