Neillsville City Council Officially Accepts Resignation of Former Mayor

Wednesday, August 29th, 2018 -- 10:23 AM

-The Neillsville City Council officially accepted the resignation of former mayor Steve Mabie at their meeting on Tuesday.

Accepting Mabie’s resignation was just one of two items on the agenda on Tuesday. The other was filling the position of mayor for the city. Before the council approved the resolution, they offered those in attendance a chance to speak, as they always do. Though there were a lot of people in attendance at Tuesday’s meeting, only one resident chose to spoke. She spoke in regards to Steve Mabie’s treatment at the previous council meeting, calling it a “disgrace” due to the argumentive and degrading attitude of certain council members towards the mayor. Before the resignation was approved, Council President and “Acting Mayor” Chuck Glassbrenner said it was “too bad this happened.” He said that Mabie always had the best interest of the City of Neillsville at heart. He also said that they would thank him for his years of service at a later date. The council then discussed filling the vacancy left by the former mayor’s resignation.

The city attorney explained that they need to appoint someone for the time being and that person could fill out the mayor’s remaining term until the April Elections. However, she also said the council could approve a special election at their next meeting and move forward with it from there. One council member stated that with the budget season coming up, he felt it was important to appoint a mayor, put the situation behind them and move on. He felt that Mr. Glassbrenner should be appointed to that position. The rest of the council agreed and approved Chuck Glassbrenner as the Mayor of Neillsville. Mr. Glassbrenner said he would work on appointing someone to fill the 1st Ward seat for the city and the council would have to elect a new Council President at their next meeting.
