Tax Levy Approved at Neillsville School Board's Annual Meeting

Tuesday, August 28th, 2018 -- 9:01 AM

-The Neillsville Annual School Board Meeting was held on Monday evening with eligible voting residents approving the tax levy for the next school year.

The Neillsville School Board approved a tax levy of $3,535,007 for the 2018-19 school year. These numbers could change slightly as this is just an estimate on numbers for the next school year’s budget. The actual numbers won’t be known until after October 15th when the actual general aid is distributed and the district knows the amount of property value. The district has seen a steady decrease in the tax levy from year to year. In 2017 the district had a tax levy of $3,756,900 and in 2016 the district had a tax levy of $3,859,926. The mil rate, or tax rate per $100,000 of property value, for 2017-18 for Neillsville was 7.53. This is the lowest for Clark County’s school districts with only Thorp and Owen-Withee coming close to that with 8.30 and 8.80 respectively.

Some other items of note, Neillsville’s average cost per student is around $12,109 and their revenue per student is $12,065. These are blow state average and much lower than the wealthiest school district’s in Wisconsin. Neillsville did see an increase in general aid this year. Last year, the district received $5,192,764 in state aid. This year, they’ll receive $5,338,393. This is due to the Governor and State Legislator returning money they initially cut from schools back in 2010-11. However, they are nowhere near back to what funding levels were. Also, this money returned to school is categorical and will only be in effect this year and next. After that, they could decide to not invest that money back into school districts.
