Marshfield Police Department Reminds Everyone to Be Vigilant of Scams

Tuesday, August 21st, 2018 -- 8:58 AM

-The Marshfield Police Department is warning residents, again, after a Marshfield man fell for an all too familiar scam.

According to the department, a 21-year-old Marshfield man was blackmailed over the internet. The man said he met an anonymous woman online and, as things progress, he sent her nude photos. The man said the woman then demanded money or she would share the pictures to friends, family and co-workers. The man paid the woman over $1,000 to an address in the Philippines. The woman then demanded more money, so the man went to the police.

The department said that many of these scams go unreported. They also said you should follow your intuition in these cases and remember that if it seems too good to be true, it probably is. The department also said that the sooner you report it, the better chance you have of getting your money back, but it’s still very difficult.
