Clark County Board of Supervisors Approves Resolution Asking Wisconsin to Review Eminent Domain Laws

Monday, August 20th, 2018 -- 11:40 AM

-The Clark County Board of Supervisors approved a resolution that will be sent to the Governor and Wisconsin Legislature asking them to review Wisconsin’s Eminent Domain Laws.

This came about due to the Enbridge Energy Company’s desire to increase oil capacity traveling through their pipeline system. This increase would cause them to build more pipelines through the state, with some being effected by the pipeline right here in Clark County. The fear is that the company would use state eminent domain laws to take the land they need to build their pipelines. Enbridge, a for profit company, could then take the land, which greatly reduces property values and tax base. Also, the property owners, unlike from wind or solar energy, receive no royalties by having the pipelines on their property. Many present at the meeting spoke against this and encouraged the board to approve the resolution. The county board also approved a resolution putting a referendum question regarding medicinal marijuana on the November ballot.

As 30 different states have legalized marijuana in some form and the question of medicinal marijuana is thrown around repeatedly on the state level, the county board decided to add this referendum to the ballot on the November 6th election. The question on the ballot will be: “Should the State of Wisconsin legalize the use of marijuana for medical purposes and regulate its use in the same manner as other prescription drugs?” If voters agree, the results will be sent to the Governor and the Wisconsin Legislature. If it fails, it will go no further than Clark County.
