Face Off Set Between Wood County Sheriff's Candidates

Wednesday, August 15th, 2018 -- 11:12 AM

(WDLB) -Wood County will get a new Sheriff. With Tom Reichert announcing his current term would be his last, four candidates emerged for Tuesday’s primary??"two on each side of the partisan primary ballot.

And Republican Shawn Becker will square off against Democrat John Hiller in the general election in November. Becker defeated Joel Flewellen by a two-to-one margin on the Republican side of the primary, while Hiller won the democratic primary over Teddy Ashbeck by just 108 votes.

"I did not expect a close race. I thought it wouldn't be this close and it did surprise me that it was this close. I kinda anticipate that the general election is going to be close too. So, I've got a lot of work to do and I've got to get my points out there and get the people of Wood County to vote for me from both parties."

Hiller retired from the Wood County Sheriff’s Department a few years ago. He and Captain Becker joined the department at the same time, and will face each other in the general election November 6th. Also in Wood County, Cindy Joosten will get four more years as the Clerk of Courts. Joosten defeated challenger Brad Kremer by a nearly two-to-one margin.

"I'm so pleased with the voting numbers. That the citizens of Wood County have expressed their support for my re-election. I believe they view that experience matters. That results and policy matter. And that the overall programing put forth by my administration meets their expectations. I pledge a continuation of service to the courts in the manner in which they've become accustom."

And because there are no Democrats running, Joosten will get another term in office. She says this one will be her last.
