Election Day Today, Get Out and Vote

Tuesday, August 14th, 2018 -- 8:02 AM

-Today is Wisconsin's partisan primary election.

Make sure to bring your photo Id with you to the polling place today, and make sure you only vote for one party on the ballot. Elections commission spokesman Reid Magney says checking the Party Preference box at the top of your ballot is a good piece of insurance for your vote.

"If you accidentally vote in a different primary, it tells the machine not to count those votes, essentially to ignore those."

If you’re not registered to vote, Magney said you need to bring an item to prove your residency. An example would be a utility bill. He also said that you likely already have a piece of ID that works for voting today.

"Either a driver's license or a state ID card, military IDs work, veteran's IDs work. Some student IDs work, you'll want to double check on those."

If you forget your photo ID, Magney said you can instead cast a provisional ballot for the primary.

"It's a regular ballot, but it gets put in an envelope and set aside. You can go to your clerk's office by I believe 4 or 4:30 on the following Friday with your ID and your ballot will be counted."

Major votes on the ballot today include the Democratic primary for Governor and the Republican Primary for the US Senate. Here in Clark County, there is a primary race between incumbent Gregg Herrick and challenger Scott Haines for Clark County Sheriff. Clark County may have a difficult choice when it comes to voting for a specific race because you can’t vote across party lines. If you want to vote for a Democratic candidate for governor, you can’t vote in the sheriff’s race as both candidates are running as Republicans. The polls are open until 8 pm today.
