Owen City Council Hears from America in Bloom Representatives

Friday, August 3rd, 2018 -- 9:12 AM

-The Owen City Council heard from two representatives from America in Bloom at their meeting last week.

The two representatives/judges gave a presentation describing both what they do and what they saw in Owen. America in Bloom is affiliated with CN Railroad and the $20,000 grant Owen received from them and the city must match it. The two judges seem to think Owen is on the right track. The Owen-Withee Police Commission chose one candidate to bring before the council, pending background checks. A captain with the Sheriff’s Department suggested the new officer get the new department in order while the city is still covered by the county. The Clark County Sheriff’s Department is willing to assist Owen with this huge undertaking. The Public Works Director was also directed to contact multiple engineering firms inquiring as to the cost of drawing up plans for the front entrance to city hall. The council also approved allowing L.A.S.T. Ace, Inc a temporary street closure at 234 N Central Ave.

The council also approved authorizing all city streets with a speed limit of under 25 mph to be designated ATV/UTV routes as stipulated by the US Senate Bill 392. The final determination of what Owen’s former Police Chief is to be paid by the city, according to the Department of Workforce Development, is $199.71. The file on the former chief’s case against the city is now closed. The council also approved allowing their new clerk to attend the ‘New Clerk’ training class in Green Bay on August 23rd and any breakout sessions of her choosing on the 24th.

Finally, the council heard the Community Development Authority’s report. Tim Swiggum reported that a railroad crossing will be needed for Quality Roasting to implement their railroad spur. Farm Tech Days went well as did the Owen Jr Fair. The OW Chamber Video was well used during both. The house at 219 N 3rd is removed, the OW Chamber member picnic and Car Show meeting was held and the Car Show/Burnout Contest is August 18th.
