Added Bonus at Wednesday Night Baseball Game in Marshfield

Friday, June 29th, 2018 -- 9:08 AM

(WDLB) -Baseball fans in Marshfield got an added bonus Wednesday night.

A UH-60 Blackhawk medical helicopter landed at Reeths Field at the Steven J. Miller baseball complex before the start of the Marshfield Chaparrals' amateur baseball game against Waupaca, as part of Military Appreciation Night at the ballpark. Marshfield native Tom Rogers and two other crew members brought the Blackhawk to Marshfield Wednesday night. Rogers is a 31-year veteran with the Army National Guard, and uses the helicopter to train members of the 238th medical company based in West Bend. His brother Dan is with the local D-A-V chapter, and helped organize Wednesday night’s event.

Tom: "With my brother being a pilot, it was kinda easy for me to make those arrangements. You just fill out the paperwork and it's some pretty simple steps."

Scott Kremer was part of the crew Wednesday night.

Scott: "We really enjoy things like this. Community outreach and just getting to know the communities that support us. Giving back and things like that. It's just a great time for us as well."

Kremer is not from the area, but his parents Dale and Kathy Kremer do live here. Kremer has been a pilot for eight years, and has served three deployments overseas. Jacob Lee was there to check it all out.

Jacob: "It's really, really, really cool. My dad was in the 82nd airborne. That's why I think it's really cool"

D-A-V Adjutant Al Labelle said Wednesday night’s event was part of an awareness campaign for the organization, which is very active serving vets and their families.

Al: "Part of this is to create awareness in who we are and what we do. Each year, DAV helps more than 1 million veterans through benefits, transportation, advocacy, employment and volunteers. Over 83% of our total expenditures go toward services programs. That's who we are and that's what we do."

The Blackhawk and its crew members flew over Hackman Field as the National Anthem was ending, then landed at the adjacent Reeths Field, and gave people a chance to climb inside and take photos and talk to the crew members--before departing Marshfield just before nine o-clock Wednesday night.
