New Community Gathering Place for Marshfield

Thursday, June 28th, 2018 -- 10:21 AM

-Downtown Marshfield will soon have a new gathering place for residents.

The opening of the new Wenzel Family Plaza will be happening very soon. They’re planning on an opening and ribbon cutting on July 11th, according to Event Coordinator with Mainstreet Marshfield, Mark Davis.

"As of right now, we are planning for the grand opening/ribbon cutting on July 11th starting at 5:30pm and, hopefully, that will be the beginning of a very successful community hub/event site."

Mark gave a short history on how the project got started.

"The very early planning started a few years ago when some property owners and the Main Street Board in Marshfield were considering trying to add a new community space for people to come to downtown Marshfield. And then after enough planning, the ground breaking began."

Mark talked about the types of events they hope to have in the plaza.

"The number one kind of event in this plaza is family friendly events. Even though they may not be the biggest money generator, we want to have as many free events as possible for kids and families of all ages to come in regardless of the day and regardless of the day of the week. And we also want to encourage having Farmer's Markets. We are trying to look into getting a Farmer's Market into the plaza as soon as the plaza is finally open. And one event we also have is we are actually going to have our 1st Octoberfest in the plaza this year."

They also hope that this plaza will help revitalize downtown and help downtown commerce.

"That's probably one of the number one priorities for the plaza is we want to revitalize downtown and encourage downtown commerce. We're hoping to create some partnerships with local businesses for special events, either Scotty's Pizza right on Chestnut Avenue or 2 1/2 cups the bakery shop. Or maybe some of the other restaurants like Nutz Deep II or Royal Tokyo. Or even some more business oriented such as MACCI, the Chamber of Commerce and Industry, or even some of the local banks. You want to try and create as much partnership as possible, so if you create these events and they're sponsored by all these businesses, people will want to take a look at it."

Mark ended our interview by talking about how this plaza came to be because of the cooperation of many different people.

"Another thing I want people to know is that the plaza was a great contribution of the combined work of the city, local businesses and private donation. All these groups came together to make sure that this plaza is not just another park. We want it to be a reason people go to Marshfield. A reason people stay in Marshfield. For people to enjoy the facilities that we're hoping to have there. We just want it to be a large part of the community for years to come."

Once again, Mainstreet Marshfield hopes to have the grand opening for the plaza on July 9th.
