Hiller's Hardware of Marshfield Donating Flags to Neillsville

Wednesday, June 27th, 2018 -- 10:18 AM

-A Marshfield Hardware Store is helping the Neillsville community gain a little more patriotism this 4th July.

Hiller’s Hardware in Marshfield has been donating flags for more than 10 years now. Initially, they would donate around 3,000 flags to the lawns surrounding their store in Marshfield. Since them, the concept has grown and the Hiller’s, along with many volunteers, blanket the City of Marshfield with over 12,000 American Flags. Phil Hiller, the owner of Hiller’s True Value in Marshfield, said he got the idea from another True Value Store in Milwaukee. “I started this project to put more patriotism in the world, which we seem to be lacking these days,” Phil said. On the flags, there’s a message card that thanks God for “the freedom He has given us.” They also thank the many veterans that make our freedom possible and show them they’re appreciated. Many volunteers make this project happen. When they first started, it was just Phil and his family that put the flags out. Now, they have many members of the community helping with the project. “Last year, we had over 300 volunteers from different communities. We give them food and a t-shirt. It’s become a big event for the community,” Phil said.

The flags go up the Sunday before the 4th of July. “Sunday is a good day to do it,” said Phil. “It’s a family day and allows people to come together and put the flags up.” This year, the City of Neillsville was selected to receive some of the donated flags from Hiller’s Hardware. “I was speaking to a customer who’s from Neillsville,” Phil said. “He seemed like someone who could make things happen and, sure enough, he lined up the service groups, so we made the donation happen.” So, the flags for Neillsville should be going up this Sunday and thank you to Phil Hiller for this wonderful donation to the Neillsville community.
