Neillsville City Council Receives Low Scores in Some Areas of Compliance Maintenance Annual Report

Thursday, June 14th, 2018 -- 9:17 AM

-The Neillsville City Council reviewed the Compliance Maintenance Annual Report at their meeting on Tuesday.

The council first discussed it during the Public Works portion of the meeting. Neillsville usually scores very well on the report, which grades the city’s wastewater treatment facility. But, due to some circumstances beyond their control, the city’s score wasn’t as good this past year. Neillsville earned an A on 6 of the 9 categories. They received a C in the category of influent flow and loadings. This is due to the large amount of extra water that is coming in to the plant from old and leaking pipes and other sources. However, the city is working on correcting the problem. Neillsville received a D in the category of Collection Systems. This is, again, due to the large amount of extra water that enters Neillsville’s system. A representative with the DNR stated that if they don’t correct the issues, Neillsville’s plant will be overwhelmed within 2 years and they won’t be able to keep up with the maintenance.

Finally, Neillsville received an F in the category of Operator Certification. This is due to the fact that Neillsville has an operator who hasn’t acquired all the necessary certifications yet. Neillsville hasn’t had an operator since 2016 when the former operator left. The city advertised for another and has reached out to outside agencies, but they haven’t had any luck. Also, they’ve had issues in getting answers to their questions from the DNR. However, Public Works Director Dave Flynn said the current operator is doing a great job and is working on getting the necessary qualifications. However, he also stated that, overall, the plant is doing well and is in good shape. This item received final approval during the regular Common Council Meeting.
