18 Hospitalized After Ammonia Spill in Abbotsford

-18 people were hospitalized and people were evacuated after an ammonia spill at Abbyland Foods in Abbotsford.

According to authorities, they received the call about the leak around 7:20pm. They asked residents to evacuate around 8pm and the order was lifted around 9pm. An ammonia pipe, which is used to keep Abbyland’s refrigerators cool, burst, causing the leak. Authorities were able to stop the leak from the pipe. 18 people were taken to the hospital because of the leak. Ammonia can cause people to experience breathing issues and dizziness.

18 different agencies responded to the leak, along with 50 first responders. The DNR was on hand to check the water for any ammonia. Authorities say that if anyone is experiencing these symptoms in the Abbotsford area, they should seek medical attention.
