New Baiting and Feeding Ban for Western Wisconsin Counties

Monday, April 23rd, 2018 -- 8:00 AM

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) -With the recent discovery of a wild deer in Eau Claire County testing positive for Chronic Wasting Disease, a new baiting and feeding ban has been established for Buffalo, Chippewa, Dunn, Pepin and Trempealeau Counties.

The restriction will last for three years, as per state law whenever the CWD is found in an area within 10 miles of a county line. A baiting and feeding ban in Eau Claire County has been enacted in 2015 after the disease was discovered on a captive deer facility there and will be renewed for another three years. The Department of Natural Resources says a two year-old female deer was collected after the agency's staff was notified of a sick deer from a local landowner.

The ban will go into effect starting May 1. That puts the total number of CWD affected counties in Wisconsin at 53. For more information regarding baiting and feeding regulations and CWD in Wisconsin, visit dnr.wi.gov and search keywords "bait" and "CWD sampling" respectively.
