Marshfield Clinic and Security Health Plan Support Girls on the Run of the Northwoods

Wednesday, April 18th, 2018 -- 8:00 AM

-Marshfield Clinic and Security Health Plan have joined together to support the Girls on the Run of the Northwoods organization in Minocqua and Wausau with financial and in-kind contributions totaling $1,000.

Girls on the Run benefits communities across the U.S. and Canada through its network of over 200 councils. Each council is committed to the mission of inspiring girls to be joyful, healthy and confident using a fun, experience-based curriculum which creatively integrates running. The program is 10 weeks long and twice a week after-school. The 20 lessons build on each other; first, girls identify their strengths, skills and talents, then they identify the strengths and beauty in their teammates. The final lessons offer an opportunity for teams to choose a community impact project that support local organizations and charities. According to Morabito, last year the results from a seven-year longitudinal study showed 97 percent of GOTR participants learned critical life skills including resolving conflict, helping others and intentional decision-making.

The program culminates with the girls being physically and emotionally prepared to complete a celebratory 5K running event. The 5K events this year will be held on Saturday, May 5, at Franklin Elementary School in Wausau, and on Saturday, May 19, at Torpy Park in Minocqua. Registration for the public to run the GOTR 5K is now open at www.gotrnorthwood.org.
