Younkers in Marshfield May Close

(USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin) -The Younkers store at Marshfield Mall is one of 12 stores across the state in danger of closing if Bon-Ton Stores Inc. does not resolve its financial problems.Bon-Ton, the parent company of Younkers, on Friday notified the Wisconsin Department of Workforce Development that it could close 12 stores and its corporate offices in Milwaukee, eliminating up to 2,255 jobs. State law requires a company to notify workers and the state of possible mass layoffs at least 60 days in advance. Bon-Ton, which filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection Feb. 4, said it could begin laying off employees starting June 5.
Younkers stores are a major retail anchor for many Wisconsin malls and their departures will pose significant challenges for mall operators.
