Marshfield Mayoral Candidates Appear in Forum

Wednesday, March 21st, 2018 -- 7:14 AM

(WDLB) -The two candidates running for the Mayor's office in Marshfield last night took turns spelling out their priorities, should they win next month's election.

Bob McManus and Tom Witzel took part in a candidates' forum held at the 2nd Street Community Center, where they spent just over 90 minutes in front of a small audience discussing their concerns with city government, and why they are seeking Marshfield's highest elected office. Witzel said improving communication between city government and the community is vital, and he wants to make sure citizens are heard. Witzel said he hears frustration from citizens who feel their concerns are not being heard. If elected, Witzel says he'll spend a lot of time learning, and listening to staff and to constituents. McManus said the city needs a better plan when it comes to repairing and replacing deteriorating streets. McManus also said he wants to dive into the city's debt issue, and start reducing it as quickly as possible. He says it's one of the issues that got him into the race. Witzel said a lot of the city's current debt came at the expense of major investments which are moving the city forward, such as the fairly-new fire station, the new library and many new business ventures which initially had city investment--but which the city will get back.

Witzel is the newest member of the Common Council, representing the sixth aldermanic district since August of 2016. He is a former Granton school teacher, and now works as a technology trainer for Marshfield Clinic Health System. McManus moved here six years ago from California, where he was involved in civic service, and worked in real estate. He is currently a mortgage lender with Forward Financial Bank. The two candidates will square off in the April third general election. The winner replaces 10-year incumbent Chris Meyer, who is stepping down after five terms in office--becoming the longest-serving Mayor in Marshfield history.
