Marshfield Alderman Asked to Help Personal Development Center Pay for Transitional Homeless Shelter

Wednesday, March 14th, 2018 -- 8:01 AM

(WDLB) -Marshfield Aldermen are being asked to help the Personal Development Center pay for the purchase and operation of the city's former transitional homeless shelter that closed in December.

P-D-C Director Renee Schulz asked the Marshfield Common Council last night to cover the 80-thousand dollar purchase price for the shelter property, plus 20-thousand dollars a year in operational expenses. P-D-C announced last week it was acquiring the former transitional homeless shelter once operated by the St. Vincent DePaul Outreach Center. Schulz said P-D-C will close on the property April First, with the goal of a May First occupancy for all current P-D-C offices and programs. Schulz said the housing portion of the new operation would be established and available by late summer, after some modifications for increased security are made to the structure.

Schulz said the facility will need renovations of 150-thousand for additional safety measures, plus another 150-thousand dollars a year in operational expenses, mainly for around-the-clock staff members. She said P-D-C is launching a public fundraising effort, and she has applied for additional state grants as well. The Council took no action on last night's funding request. The item will be on the agenda for the Council's March 27th meeting.
