Memorial Medical Center's CEO on Rural Health, Part 9

Thursday, March 1st, 2018 -- 11:57 AM

-President and CEO of Memorial Medical Center, Ryan Neville, spoke with Dr. Bill Auxier of Rural Health Leadership Radio on the importance of rural health.

Ryan offered some tips for other rural hospitals and rural health leaders.

"You know, this will come out of left field, but I'll tell you. There's a lot of great innovative work going on with vendors and, not only vendors, but companies in the country that really value I would call rural space. And they have interesting business models. Often times you get inundated with people that want to sell you something. I started taking and sitting down with more of those people because they're thinking in a whole different way that I need to understand. They think a little bit more about consumerism."

"That's kind of a word that in healthcare we're trying to understand. How can we have more consumerism? So, we're working with a company, an IT company, that is in the lab space for rural facilities. Their goal is to have a technology and a process so that we can utilize our lab work because we have the capacity to do more lab tests in the day.

"To take the time to really look at what they're trying to achieve could be a big opportunity rather than hating taking vendor calls or email. So, I think one tip is to have an openness and considering what someone is trying to do that's innovative."

Coming up on Friday, Ryan will offer suggestions on what other rural hospitals and rural health leaders could be doing better.
