Opelt Beats Second Ranked Davis

Sunday, January 28th, 2018 -- 8:35 AM

Cornell College senior wrestler, Phillip Opelt of Neillsville knocked off second-ranked Jimmy Davis of Loras, 7-3, in the marquee match of the night at 149 pounds in Dubuque, Iowa on Thursday night.

The two all-Americans were tied 2-2 early in the third period after an escape by Davis, a fifth-place NCAA finisher a year ago.
Opelt (9-1) pulled ahead with a takedown and two-point near fall. He also claimed riding time in handing Davis (21-2) just his second loss of the season. Opelt's win put the Rams ahead 9-6 through four bouts.

Following Opelt's victory though, Loras went on to win the final six matches of the meet, recording bonus points in three of them, in winning 27-9.

Cornell College returns to Dubuque Saturday for the Duhawk Open, hosted by Loras.
