Four Fires in Four Days in Wood County

Wednesday, December 27th, 2017 -- 11:24 AM

(WDLB) -It’s a challenge keeping the wreath green in Wood County this holiday season. Four fires in four days have brought the red bulb count to seven on the wreath outside the Marshfield Fire Station, which keeps track of fires in Wood County, during the annual “Keep the Wreath Green” fire safety campaign.

Marshfield firefighters were on the scene of another structure fire at a home at 1412 South Cedar Avenue. Marshfield Chief Scott Owen says crews were on the scene for more than three hours in dangerously cold weather. Four occupants of the home got out safely, although one person was treated at the Marshfield Medical Center and then released. The Red Cross is assisting those residents with temporary housing. A Christmas Eve fire did more than 40-thousand dollars’ worth of damage to an apartment above Mr. G’s Saloon at 136 South Central Avenue in downtown Marshfield. A male resident was taken to the Marshfield Medical Center, then later transferred to the U-W Burn Center in Madison.

On Saturday, Grand Rapids had a kitchen fire. Grand Rapids Fire Chief Don Bohn said the fire was contained to the kitchen, but there was smoke damage throughout the entire house. Bohn said his department also responded to a house filling with smoke after a furnace malfunction, and minor smoke damage was reported.
