Remember Your Pets During the Heat Wave

Friday, June 4th, 2021 -- 10:05 AM

(WMTV) -As the weather heats up here in Wisconsin, the Dane County Humane Society is offering tips for pet owners to protect their furry ones from the extreme temperatures.

With temperatures expected to reach the 90s, The DCHS is encouraging pet owners to watch out for symptoms of heatstroke. Symptoms include panting, lethargy, drooling, fever, vomiting and collapse, according to a release.

If you think your pet is having a heatstroke, call a veterinarian right away. The DCHS adds it’s important to keep your pet hydrated. On very hot days, you should refill your pet’s water bowl more often.

It’s also important to give your pet several options for cooling off, such as a fan, iced water or a cool treat. Other tips from the DCHS include never leave your pet alone inside a car, take your pet for walks when it’s cooler like in the mornings or later evenings, and avoid hot sidewalks that can easily burn your pet’s paws.
