Discussions Continue on Marshfield's Homeless Shelter

Tuesday, December 5th, 2017 -- 9:01 AM

(WDLB) -Discussions regarding the future of Marshfield’s homeless shelter will continue today, after a discussion yesterday involving many community, city and county officials.

Nine different organizations were represented at a meeting at City Hall Plaza, regarding a homeless shelter that is scheduled to close today. The Board of Directors for St. Vincent DePaul which runs the facility says it can no longer do so under the present setup. There are issues involving drug and alcohol abuse and domestic violence, issues the St. Vincent board is not equipped to handle. Marshfield’s Personal Development Center, which deals with domestic abuse and child-visitation issues, had a seat at the table yesterday, as did the Marshfield Area United Way, Compassion In Action, the Marshfield Area Community Foundation, Mary’s Place, the city of Marshfield, Wood County, the Wisconsin Rapids Family Center and the Marshfield Police Department.

Discussions centered on the future of the homeless shelter, and how each organization would use it, or assist in running it. P-D-C said it would use the facility as a shelter for victims of domestic abuse, and even consider relocating all P-D-C services to that location. The same organizations at yesterday’s meeting will now meet individually with the St. Vincent DePaul board of Directors tonight, to continue discussions regarding the future of the homeless shelter, which opened up four years ago.
