Clark County Board of Supervisors Approve Legal Battle Against Opioid Manufacturers

Thursday, November 16th, 2017 -- 11:08 AM

-The Clark County Board of Supervisors approved a resolution engaging counsel for prosecution of county claims against opioid manufacturers.

As many are aware, the nation is facing an opioid epidemic as people are getting addicted to prescribed pain medications, which opens the door for heavier drug use. Even here in Clark County, there has been a noticeable and substantial increase in the amount of user hooked on prescribed medications and the illegal activity that comes along with them trying to get the medication. Clark County has seen a substantial increase in the cost and time used to prosecute these cases. This lawsuit, that Wisconsin counties are spearheading, is trying to go after the manufactures of these opioids as they believe the manufactures used unlawful and unethical marketing practices in selling the drugs and they didn’t properly warn people about the addictive dangers of them.

The Clark County Sheriff highly supports this as they have never seen the drug use and overdose deaths as bad as they are now. The department needs to have Narcan on hand for themselves in case they get any on their skin when they are searching suspects. The issue itself requires a tremendous amount of time and money from multiple departments. If the litigation was successful, the final settlement would be 75% to the counties involved and 25% to the law firm. It was approved with 25 voting yes and 1 voting no.
