Wild Weather for Wisconsin Farmers Last Week

(Wisconsin Ag Connection) Though the weather was a bit cooler last week, farmers around Wisconsin inched closer to finishing their planting activity.

According to the Wisconsin Ag Connection, that's according to the latest crop/weather summary from the Wisconsin Ag Statistics Service, which noted that scattered storms dropped large amounts of rain in some areas; with several counties in the north reporting snow on Friday morning.

Topsoil moisture conditions were rated two percent very short, 14 percent short, 74 percent adequate and 10 percent surplus. As of Sunday, about 95 percent of the corn had been planted and 75 percent of the crop is already emerged.

That's three days ahead of last year and nine days better than the five-year average. Corn condition is rated 81 percent good to excellent. Soybeans are all but nine percent planted. That's also four days ahead of 2020 and more than two weeks ahead of normal. Emergence is reported at 63 percent.

Thirteen percent of the oats are headed, with the crop's condition rated 84 percent good to excellent, four percentage points better than last week. And the first cutting of alfalfa hay is reported at 27 percent complete, four days further along than last year and one day ahead of average.
